You’ve probably seen it all over the news about the rise in domestic violence calls. NBC reported that in March alone, Houston police received about 300 more domestic violence calls than they did in February, which is about a 20% increase. Houston is not alone in this increase thought; 17 other major cities reported a rise in domestic violence calls.
This increase likely relates to the stay at home and shelter in place orders put in place by cities and states in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19. This phenomenon can likely be attributed to the stress of businesses and schools closing, which is leaving many people out of work, financially stressed, and stuck in almost constant, close proximity to family members. Forbes has stated that since the middle of march, the U.S. has received more than 2,000 calls from individuals referencing COVID-19 as a contributing factor of their abuse.
